FWD: 8th Grade Persuasive Essay Task — can you differentiate this for my three groups?
Hey, forwarding this from my unit plan doc. I have three pretty distinct groups this semester and I just don't have time to rewrite this myself tonight.
Group 1 is still working on paragraph structure and identifying claims vs. evidence. Group 2 is at grade level — they can write a basic argument but struggle with counterargument. Group 3 is ahead; a few of them are already writing at a high school level and get bored fast.
The assignment is below. Same rubric applies to all three groups (attached). Can you build out the three versions?

Unit 4 Culminating Task — Persuasive Essay
Subject: Civic Issues and Local Government
Grade: 8
Task: Students will select one local civic issue affecting their community (e.g., public transit access, park maintenance funding, school start times) and write a 4-5 paragraph persuasive essay arguing for a specific policy change. Essays must include a clear thesis, at least two pieces of supporting evidence, acknowledgment of a counterargument, and a call to action in the conclusion.
Rubric categories: Claim clarity, Evidence use, Counterargument, Organization, Voice and Conventions. Each category scored 1-4.
