Hi,
Forwarding this for the sub plans but actually I need discussion questions for my own class tomorrow - completely forgot to prep them.
Grade 10 English, mixed ability. We've been doing a unit on identity and belonging. The story is about 12 pages but I'm pasting the key excerpt below - the scene where Dara finds her grandmother's letters and realizes the family moved under a different name.
---
Excerpt from "The Hollow Shore" by fictional author Priya Tamboli:
The letters were bundled with kitchen twine, not ribbon, which told Dara something about her grandmother before she read a single word. The return address said Nadia Voss. Not Nadia Ferreira. Not the name on the gravestone outside, not the name on Dara's own birth certificate three generations down the line.
She sat on the attic floor for a long time. The house was making its usual noises. Downstairs her mother was cooking something with garlic. Everything was exactly as it had been an hour ago and nothing was the same.
The first letter was dated 1962. It began: "By the time you read this, I will have already decided who to become."
---
Grade 10, mixed ability, 45-minute period. Can you generate discussion questions? I need scaffolded options because I have a few students who shut down when questions feel too abstract and two or three who get bored if we stay surface-level too long.
Thanks
