RE: Observation Notes - Ms. Chen, 7th Grade Science
Here are my notes from observing Lily today. She is in her second semester of student teaching and I need to write her mid-term evaluation by Friday.
Lesson: Cell division (mitosis), 7th grade life science, 48-minute period
Positives:
- Great warm-up activity, had students draw what they remember from yesterday
- Moved around the room constantly, checked in with every table group
- Used the microscope station well, clear procedures posted
- One student was off task and she redirected without stopping the lesson
Concerns:
- Her transitions between activities are slow, lost about 8 minutes total
- Higher-level questions were mostly directed at the same 3-4 students
- The exit ticket was too simple, just recall, did not check for understanding of the process
- She seemed nervous during the direct instruction and read from her slides a lot
Framework: We use the Danielson Framework at our program
Thanks,
Margaret Holloway
